Week 4 Social bookmarking

This is my favorite exercise so far! I was aware of del.icio.us but had not played with it much. Wow! Bad judgement on my part. I can see so many ways to using this as a research tool. Every month I review a resource with the Nursing Research council and my tool for this month will be del.icio.us.

Week 3 Social Networking Tools

As the mother of three 20-somethings who live and die by MySpace I thought I may find this week's assignments intriguing. Instead, I found them to be irrelevant to my work environment as it is today. FaceBook and LinkedIn seem only to be valuable if they are constantly being updated. LinkedIn proved useless as the "colleagues" section contained absolutely no one that was still working at any of my past or present employers. FaceBook is interesting. I did find some clever librarian groups to join. It is blocked by our firewall so if I did come up with a great professional use it would be for networking purposes only. I am so looking foward to Week 4's assignment.

Week 2 Wikis

After wrestling, unsuccessfully I might add,  with the firewall at work I came home to find that my blog and wiki had updated perfectly.  Thank God for Macs!   I see relevance in the use of wikis to share information related to a specific project.   My wiki will be used by a group of librarians scattered across the country to explore the newest version of  Sharepoint and use it to develop a community site within our health system.    A wiki will give us the ability to format the information we need to share in the way that we need it to be formatted.   It's entirely collaborative and allows us to edit and update our documents as we work independently across the country.  A blog wouldn't allow us to integrate our work.  Although we could create a blog to use as a means of alerting each other when a group member makes a change to the wiki.

Week 1 Library 2.0 Blogs and RSS

My blog is created, my feeds are subscribed to. My goal for the class is to open my blog every morning before I open my email, read my feeds, and post one way I can use an idea gleaned from the feeds of that morning to better serve my users and myself professionally.

And away we go!!!

Creating a blog is not a difficult thing for me. Maintenance, well, that's a whole 'nother ball of wax. This class is just what I need to motivate me to create a blog rooted in professional development, stay focused on maintenance, and use it to my best advantage.
